About the Woolly Mammoth

The Mammuthus primigenius, or woolly mammoth, was one of the most iconic creatures of the Pleistocene epoch. Roaming the vast grasslands and tundra of Europe, Asia, and North America, these magnificent animals stood up to 3.4 metres tall and weighed as much as 6 tonnes.

Perfectly adapted to the harsh Ice Age climate, woolly mammoths were covered in a thick coat of long, shaggy fur — sometimes reaching up to 90cm in length — with a dense undercoat for insulation. Their enormous curved tusks, which could grow to over 4 metres long, were used for foraging, fighting, and clearing snow to reach vegetation beneath.

Woolly mammoths lived alongside early humans, who hunted them for food, used their bones for shelter construction, and depicted them in cave art. They went extinct approximately 4,000 years ago, with the last isolated populations surviving on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean.

North Sea Fossils

The North Sea floor was once dry land — a vast, fertile plain known as Doggerland — which was home to mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, cave lions, and early humans. As sea levels rose at the end of the last Ice Age, this landscape was gradually submerged, preserving the remains of its ancient inhabitants in the seabed. Today, fishing trawlers and dredging operations occasionally bring these extraordinary fossils to the surface, making North Sea mammoth bones among the most historically significant Ice Age specimens available.
